Root canal therapy or endodontics is the treatment of inflamed or dead pulp tissue within the tooth.

It is a way to save a tooth that might otherwise have to be taken out by removing the infected tissue and then filling the root to stop further infection. It usually happens as a result of decay or injury.

We have our own dentist with the advanced skills needed for the detailed work of root canal therapy at The Dental Surgery Burnham. An X-ray can show the shape and number of roots and any signs of infection in the surrounding bone.

Once the infected tissue has been removed, the space is carefully cleaned. It is then medicated to keep it sterile and to allow the surrounding tissue to heal. Once it is cleaned, the space is sealed with a temporary filling. A further visit will be needed to complete the treatment with a permanent filling.

The procedure is carried out under a local anaesthetic and should feel no different than having a filling, although it will take longer to complete. Usually, between 1-3 visits are adequate.

On some occasions, a crown may be needed to strengthen the tooth, and this will take additional visits.
