New Year, new smile. As a new year rolls around a lot of people look to make a change somehow, as a way to press the reset button and keep things fresh. What better way to do this than with a little makeover for your smile with a dental implant.
Here’s how you can have a new year smile in Burnham with dental implants.
What are they?
For those not familiar with this treatment plan, it essentially involves the use of a crown fitted upon an artificial tooth root that we insert below your gum line and into your jawbone. Then as you go through the healing process the bone in your jaw should seal back around the tooth’s insertion point to provide a sturdy bedrock for it to rest on.
It’s primarily used when your dentist needs to replace badly cracked and damaged teeth that can’t be repaired by other means or if there are some gaps along your gum line that you would like to fill in.
The new teeth are held in place with a sterilised titanium screw and once it’s fitted securely it can also strengthen the surrounding teeth, by helping to relieve pressure when you bite, chew or clench your jaw muscles.
What does the process involve?
An appointment for your implants to get that new year smile in Burnham is fairly straightforward and involves taking an impression of your teeth to create your new implant. Before it’s fitted our team will shape and shade the tooth, to ensure that it blends in with its neighbours to provide you with a natural looking replacement.
At Dental Surgery Burnham our team will take you through the implantation process with the least amount of discomfort as possible, as we help give you that lasting new smile.
Is it going to be painful?
A common question patients have for our team is whether their upcoming procedure is going to be painful at all. It’s an understandable query as the mouth is a very sensitive area, especially if you already suffer from overly sensitive teeth.
In the case of dental implants there may be some mild discomfort as it does involve some minor surgery, but your dentist will normally use a local anaesthetic to limit the pain as much as they possibly can. If however you’re still concerned about this you can also discuss the use of general sedation during your treatment.
Any advice for aftercare?
Generally it’s pretty easy to look after a dental implant, you just have to keep it clean and free from bacteria as your gums heal. We recommend our patients give it a light brushing as part of their normal cleaning routine at least once or twice a day. Patients should also limit their use of dental floss and avoid mouthwash products during the healing process, as some brands can irritate your gums.
So as you can see, when it comes to giving you that new smile you would be making a good investment with a dental implant. To learn more about this process or to schedule an appointment for a consultation, just contact our team at the practice.
